The varsity volleyball team beat six teams to take first place at the Maize High Volleyball Tournament on Sept. 17.

“(Winning) was fun because we didn’t know how we would do against Blue Valley West,” outside hitter Cassy Craig, 12, said. “They were our toughest competition. It felt really good beating the 5A and 6A schools.”

Eleven teams competed in the tournament, which ran from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Maize High. South defeated Hutchinson, Wichita North, Derby, Blue Valley West, Wichita Northwest and Kapaun. The team is now 17-0 for the season.

“We started off good because we won our first game against Hutchinson, and that put us in a positive groove,” Shelby Lewis, 12, said. “After the win we started looking forward to the whole day.”
